World Series or Bust: Yoenis Cèspedes Gets Traded

The four words in my title are something that I never thought was going to be said. Céspedes is on my favorite player list, he is well liked by the fan base and I loved watching him play. I went through so many emotions today, sadness to acceptance and beyond.
I cried when I saw the news that our prized outfielder had been traded. At first, I didn’t believe it. How could we have gotten Jon Lester? A fantasy that only the craziest fan would have thought possible, but before I knew it, the news was all over Twitter from credible sources. At work I couldn’t focus, I needed to know more about this deal and why Bill Beane, who we are supposed to trust, dealt away someone I thought was an untouchable.
Listening to talk radio, reading blog post from Athletics Nation and talking to my mom helped me to get through today. I finally arrived at acceptance and this is when I put my emotions away to really analyze this trade.
Though I enjoyed watching our Cuban Missile throw out runners at home plate, his stats are average and actually match up to be as effective as two of the players we picked up. Lester is a pitcher that I would definitely have with us than against us. If we go against the Tigers, Angels, hell even the Dodgers I feel confident we’re winning that game with Lester on the mound. And 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA in the World Series…Just sayin’. I’ve never seen Billy make this kind of a move, the kind of move that says “Fasten your seat belts A’s fans we just went all in!”
The realist and the rational part of me loves this trade and can just hear the O.Co going wild as we sit watching game one of the World Series. My heartstrings still hurt and my best wishes go to Yo. He was great while he was with us and a class act, loved watching him play. At least we’ll still get to see him play, though it will hurt when he hits bombs against us. Good while it lasted.
I’ll end with a quote from Chris Townsend on 95.7 the Game, “Don’t fall in love with the name on the back of the jersey. You gotta fall in love with the name on the front.” Green and Gold forever and In Billy We Trust. I am one excited A’s fan right now and who could blame me?
